Preparing for surgery

The weeks before, the day of, and the first days at home.

Before surgery

Do I need to stop any medications before my hip or knee replacement?

Most patients do need to pause certain medications, but only your surgical team can tell you which ones and when.

Blood thinners, some anti-inflammatory drugs, and certain supplements are commonly held before procedures like anterior approach total hip replacement or total knee replacement. Dr. Goldberg's office will give you a specific list and timeline at your pre-operative visit. Never stop or start a medication on your own before surgery.

Before surgery

How long will I stay in the hospital after surgery?

Most people stay one to two nights after a hip or knee replacement, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (2024), though some patients go home the same day depending on their health and the specific procedure.

Dr. Goldberg's practice centers on hip and knee reconstruction, including anterior approach total hip replacement, a technique that reaches the hip joint from the front rather than the side or back, and total and partial knee replacement. His team will tell you which length of stay to expect based on the surgery you are having and your overall health.

Before surgery

Will I need someone to drive me home and help me afterward?

Yes. You will not be able to drive yourself home after anesthesia, and most patients need help at home for the first several days after hip or knee replacement or hip preservation surgery.

Arrange a ride in advance, and have someone available for meals, getting around, and basic daily tasks while your mobility is limited.

Before surgery

How should I prepare my home before surgery?

Set up your home before surgery, not after.

Clear loose rugs and cords from walkways, move frequently used items to waist height, and choose a sturdy chair with arms as a recovery spot. If you are having a knee or hip replacement, Dr. Goldberg's team may also recommend a raised toilet seat or a shower bench; they will tell you which equipment fits your procedure.

Before surgery

Can I eat or drink before my surgery?

No, not within the window your surgical team specifies.

Most patients stop eating solid food at midnight before surgery and may have clear liquids up to a few hours beforehand, per guidelines from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (2023), but the exact timing depends on your surgery time and anesthesia plan. Follow the written instructions from your pre-operative appointment exactly.

Before surgery

Should I do exercises before surgery?

Many patients benefit from it, but check with Dr. Goldberg's team before starting anything on your own.

Dr. Goldberg completed fellowship training in adult reconstruction at the University of Utah, and his practice focuses on hip and knee reconstruction, where strengthening the muscles around the joint before a total or partial knee replacement or an anterior approach hip replacement can support a smoother recovery. Your care team will confirm whether specific exercises are right for you before surgery.
