For Referring Physicians
How to refer a patient to Dr. Goldberg.
Referring a patient
Tyler Goldberg, MD, practices orthopedic surgery in Austin, with a clinical focus that spans the shoulder, the hip, and the knee. His surgical practice is concentrated in adult hip and knee reconstruction, built on a fellowship in adult reconstruction completed at the University of Utah. Residency training, including an orthopedic surgery residency and a general surgery internship, took place at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga; medical school was at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He is affiliated with Austin Orthopedic Institute.
On the hip side, Dr. Goldberg's practice includes anterior approach total hip replacement for both primary and revision cases, along with hip preservation and arthroscopy. On the knee side, it includes total knee replacement and partial knee replacement, each covering primary and revision work, along with knee arthroscopy. A referring physician sorting a patient's joint complaint by body region, rather than by diagnosis, will find both the hip and knee pathways covered under one practice.
Where a shoulder finding accompanies a hip or knee referral, or where the diagnostic picture is still forming, the when-to-refer guide for this practice sets out criteria by joint and by urgency tier. Dr. Goldberg's full training background is detailed on his physician profile.

Which patients should I refer to Dr. Goldberg?
Refer any adult with hip or knee pain that has not improved after a reasonable trial of conservative care, or any patient whose imaging already shows structural joint disease that looks surgical.
Dr. Goldberg completed fellowship training in adult reconstruction at the University of Utah and limits his practice to adult hip and knee disease, including patients who may be candidates for anterior approach total hip replacement, primary or revision, hip preservation and arthroscopy, or total and partial knee replacement. A patient whose primary complaint is shoulder pain falls outside this referral pathway; those patients are better served by a surgeon whose practice is built around the shoulder. For the duration and imaging thresholds that separate an urgent referral from a routine one, see the criteria laid out in the referral guide.
What should I send with the referral?
Send current weight-bearing imaging of the involved joint, a note on which nonoperative treatments the patient has already tried and for how long, and a line on how the pain or stiffness limits daily function.
A patient who shows up with six months of physical therapy notes and a recent x-ray gets evaluated faster than one who shows up with neither. If the patient has already had an injection or a course of bracing, note the date and the result; it shortens the first visit and keeps the surgical conversation, when one is warranted, grounded in what has already failed.
How do I get a patient onto Dr. Goldberg's schedule?
Call or fax the referral to Austin Orthopedic Institute using the number listed on the practice's contact page, and note that the patient is being sent for hip or knee evaluation specifically.

What happens at the first visit after a referral?
The first visit builds on the referring workup, it does not repeat it from zero.
Dr. Goldberg reviews the referring physician's notes and imaging, confirms or refines the working diagnosis with a focused hip or knee exam, and orders additional imaging only where the existing studies leave a real question unanswered. Because his fellowship training at the University of Utah was in adult reconstruction, the first visit for a hip or knee patient is oriented around surgical and non-surgical options from that same framework, so the patient is not asked to start the diagnostic process over. Patients can review his training and focus areas on his physician profile.
How are findings communicated back to the referring physician?
A written summary goes back to the referring office after every visit, not only when the patient requests it or asks a question.
That summary states the exam findings, the imaging read, and the plan in the same terms a referring physician would use in a chart note, so it can be filed directly rather than translated. If the plan changes at a later visit, including a move from non-surgical management to a surgical conversation, the referring physician receives that update as well. The goal is that a referring physician should never learn their patient had surgery from the patient rather than from the chart.
What follow-up does Dr. Goldberg provide after referral?
Follow-up is scheduled and managed directly by Dr. Goldberg's office for the duration of hip or knee treatment, whether that treatment stays non-surgical or progresses to a procedure such as total or partial knee replacement or anterior approach hip replacement.
The referring physician continues to receive updates at the natural checkpoints in that course of care: after the initial decision point, after any procedure, and at the point where the patient is released back to routine primary or referring care. Referring physicians who want the fuller criteria for when a case should come back for reassessment can see them in the referral guide for hip and knee conditions.
