Preparing for your visit
What to bring, what happens at the first appointment, and how the plan is made.
Do I need a referral to see Dr. Goldberg?
Most people don't need one to schedule a visit, but it's worth checking with your insurance first.
Many patients reach Dr. Goldberg's hip and knee reconstruction practice through a referral from another physician, since referring-physician relationships are the main way his practice connects with new patients. If you already have a referral, records, or imaging from another doctor, bringing or forwarding those ahead of time helps your first visit move faster.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, and a current list of medications.
If you've had prior imaging of your hip, knee, or shoulder, bring the actual images or the disc, not just the written report, since the images themselves are more useful than a summary. A short note on when your symptoms started and what makes them better or worse also helps.
Will I need X-rays at my first visit?
Often, yes, if you haven't had recent imaging of the joint you're being seen for.
Dr. Goldberg's practice centers on the hip and knee, so imaging of those joints is a routine part of a first evaluation for problems like joint pain or stiffness. If you've had X-rays or an MRI taken elsewhere within the last few months, bringing those with you may mean you don't need new images that same day.
How long does the first visit take?
Plan on 30 to 60 minutes, though the exact time depends on what's being evaluated.
The visit usually includes a discussion of your symptoms and history, a physical exam of the joint involved, and a review of any imaging, with time at the end to talk through next steps.
What happens after my first appointment?
You'll leave with a plan, whether that's additional imaging, a course of non-surgical treatment, or further evaluation toward a procedure if that's where your exam points.
Dr. Goldberg trained in adult hip and knee reconstruction at the University of Utah, and his evaluation of hip and knee concerns reflects that focus. The office will handle scheduling any next steps before you leave.
